Felidae is home to two servals, Mia and Anthony. These two spotted cats are medium sized and love to show off their beautiful fur during tours. While Anthony enjoys people from a distance, Mia likes to be petted and interact with people. Although these kitties aren’t all that large, they have to longest legs of any cat (in relation to body size)!!

Servals can be found all across Africa, south of the Sahara. They prefer the savanna although some can be found in more mountainous areas. These cats typically avoid jungle and highly forested areas, as well as desert areas.

Servals typically hunt at night, which helps them to avoid many larger predators. While they specialize in hunting rodents, their diet can also include birds, hares, reptiles, insects, fish and frogs. When hunting, 90% of a servals prey weighs less than 200 g, meaning they hunt regularly.

The serval is a medium-sized cat, measuring 59 to 92 cm in head-body length, with a relatively short, 20 to 45 cm tail, and a shoulder height of about 54 to 66 cm. Their weight ranges from about 7 to 12 kg for females, and from 9 to 18 kg for males.

It is a strong yet slender animal, with long legs and a fairly short tail. Due to its leg length, it is relatively one of the tallest cats.

The head is small in relation to the body, and the tall, oval ears are set close together. The serval is usually boldly spotted black on tawny, with two or four stripes from the top of the head down the neck and back, transitioning into spots. The backs of the ears are black with a distinctive white bar on them.

Similar to most cats, the serval has a short gestation period of just over 3 months. While it is most common to have two kittens in a litter, the number can range between 1 and 4. It typically takes 12 months for the children to leave their mothers. Females reach sexual maturity anywhere from the age of 1-2.
